AUCHTERARDER’s Craig Menzies and Willie Turnbull edged out father and son David and Mark Riddell for a place in the last 32 of The Daily Mail Foursomes in a thrilling duel at Baberton, writes Cara Sloman.
There was never more than one hole between the Scottish pairs and Menzies and Turnbull were relieved when the Baberton pair just missed an extraordinary 80 foot putt at the last which would have wrapped up the tie.
Instead it was Menzies, who had never played the Edinburgh course before, who went on to sink a 15 foot birdie putt for victory at the first extra hole.
He admitted afterwards: ‘We felt lucky. We just managed to scrape it over the line, but a win is a win. We were chuffed. It was played in good spirits, but you could tell we all wanted to win.’
They are now just one win away from making the grand final at Slaley Hall in October. Menzies, who has never competed in the world’s largest amateur golf tournament before, added: ‘We are learning as we go along. It’s a good format for us. I always enjoy it as anything can happen. The next one is the biggie. If we win we’ll be well up for it.’
